In this tutorial, we walk you through how to set up Multifactor Authentication (MFA) on your school or work owned account. At the bottom is a video tutorial to help you walk through this process. You may pause the video at any time while you work through the steps.
Time required: 5 to 10 minutes
What you need:
-
A PC or laptop with a web browser
-
A mobile phone with internet access and camera
-
Your SJVS username and password
1) Before you begin
-
Make sure your phone can receive text messages and notifications.
-
On your phone, open the Apple App Store or Google Play Store and search for Microsoft Authenticator. Confirm the publisher shows Microsoft Corporation.
2) Start on your PC or laptop
-
Go to outlook.com in a browser.
-
Sign in with your email username and password.
-
When prompted, enter your mobile phone number and select Next.
-
You will receive a 6-digit code by text. Enter the code on the PC and select Next.
-
On the screen that shows your phone number, select the box to confirm. You will receive another text.
-
After this step, you will be taken to Microsoft Authenticator setup on the PC.
3) Set up Microsoft Authenticator on your phone
-
Open the Microsoft Authenticator app you installed earlier.
-
If you see intro screens, select Next until you reach the main Accounts screen.
-
If prompted about backups or tips, select Skip.
-
On the Accounts screen, select the + icon at the top.
-
Select Work or school account.
-
Select Scan a QR code.
-
Point your phone’s camera at the QR code shown on your PC to add the account.
If the QR code will not scan, select Can’t scan QR code on your PC and follow the instructions to enter the code manually in the Authenticator app.
4) Approve the number match
-
On your PC, select Next. A two-digit number appears on the screen.
-
On your phone, a Microsoft Authenticator prompt appears. Enter the two-digit number, then select Yes to approve.
The PC page refreshes and signs you into your email.
5) Confirm sign-in and you’re done
-
After approval, you should land in Outlook on the web.
-
Keep the Authenticator app installed on your phone. You will use it to approve future sign-ins.
6) Daily re-authentication
-
You will not repeat the full setup each time.
-
Every 24 hours, you will be asked to re-authenticate by text message as part of SJVS security. Follow the on-screen prompt, enter the code, and continue.
