Accessing and Activating Microsoft 365

Accessing and Activating Microsoft 365

Applies to: Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, OneDrive, and other Microsoft 365 applications

Overview

Microsoft 365 applications must be activated with your school-issued Microsoft account before you can create, edit, or save documents. You may see a yellow notification stating “Subscription Required to Edit and Save” when Microsoft Office is installed but has not yet been activated with the correct account.

Your Microsoft 365 username is your complete school or work email address.

If you have not logged into your Microsoft 365 account yet, you will need to do so before proceeding. Open a web browser and navigate to outlook.com to start the sign in process. You may be asked to enter your mobile phone number and to download the Microsoft Authenticator application. Once completed, continue the steps below.

Activate Microsoft 365 on a School Computer

  1. Open Microsoft Word, Excel, or PowerPoint.
  2. Select Sign In in the upper-right corner.

If the yellow Subscription Required to Edit and Save message appears, select Sign In within that message.

  3. Enter your complete school or work email address, such as:

    yourname@yourschool.org

  4. Select Next.
  5. When asked which type of account you are using, select Work or school account.
  6. Enter your school or work account password.
  7. Complete any verification request that appears.
  8. Accept the Microsoft license agreement or privacy prompts, if displayed.
  9. Close and reopen the Microsoft application.

Microsoft requires the work or school account associated with the organization’s subscription to activate the desktop applications.

Confirm That Microsoft 365 Is Activated

In Word, Excel, or PowerPoint:

  1. Select File.
  2. Select Account.
  3. Look under Product Information.

The application should show Microsoft 365 as an activated or licensed product. It should also display your Cristo Rey Orlando school account.

If another account is displayed, select Sign Out, close all Microsoft applications, reopen Word, and sign in with your complete school email address.

Use Microsoft 365 in a Web Browser

Microsoft 365 can also be accessed without opening the desktop applications:

  1. Go to Microsoft365.com.
  2. Select Sign In.
  3. Enter your complete email address.
  4. Select Work or school account when prompted.
  5. Enter your school or work account password.
  6. Select Apps to open Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, OneDrive, and other available Microsoft applications.

Microsoft confirms that users can sign in with a work or school account and access the available Microsoft 365 web applications from the Apps menu.

Install Microsoft 365

If the desktop applications are not already installed:

  1. Sign in at Microsoft365.com with your school or work account.
  2. Select Install apps.
  3. Select Microsoft 365 apps.
  4. Open the downloaded installer.
  5. Follow the installation prompts.
  6. Open Word after installation and sign in with your school account.

The Install apps option is available only when the assigned Microsoft 365 license includes desktop application installation.

Troubleshooting

“Subscription Required to Edit and Save”

Sign out of any personal Microsoft account and sign back in using your complete school email address. After signing in, close and reopen the application.

Personal and School Account Prompt

Select Work or school account, not Personal account.

Microsoft 365 Keeps Showing the Wrong Account

  1. Open Word.
  2. Select File > Account.
  3. Sign out of all accounts shown.
  4. Close every Microsoft application.
  5. Reopen Word.
  6. Sign in using only your school account.

No “Install Apps” Option

Your account may not have a desktop application license assigned, or the school may manage software installation centrally. The browser-based versions may still be available. Microsoft recommends contacting the organization’s Microsoft 365 administrator when the installation option is absent from a work or school account.

Password or Sign-In Problems

Do not create a new personal Microsoft account using your school email address. Submit an MTP support ticket and include:

  • Your full name
  • Your school email address
  • The application you are opening
  • A screenshot of the message
  • The device name, when available
