How to Clear Browser Cache and Cookies (Chrome, Safari, Edge)

Applies to: All staff and students using Chrome, Safari (Mac), or Microsoft Edge
Purpose: Clear stored website data to fix loading issues, login errors, or outdated pages
Why this matters: Cache and cookies help websites load faster, but over time they can cause problems (e.g., incorrect pages, stuck logins, or browser errors). Clearing them often resolves these issues quickly.

What Are Cache and Cookies?

  • Cache = Temporary files your browser saves to load websites faster.

  • Cookies = Small pieces of data that remember your logins, site preferences, and browsing history.

Clearing both will log you out of most websites, but it helps refresh your browsing experience.

Google Chrome (Mac or Windows)

  1. Open Chrome.

  2. Click the three dots (⋮) in the top-right corner.

  3. Select SettingsPrivacy and security.

  4. Click Clear browsing data.

  5. In the popup:

    • Time range: Select All time.

    • Check: Cookies and other site data and Cached images and files.

    • (Optional: Leave “Browsing history” unchecked if you want to keep your visited sites list.)

  6. Click Clear data.

  7. Close and reopen Chrome.

Safari (Mac)

  1. Open Safari.

  2. In the top menu bar, click SafariSettings (or Preferences on older versions).

  3. Go to the Privacy tab.

  4. Click Manage Website Data.

  5. Click Remove All.

  6. Confirm by clicking Remove Now.

  7. Close and reopen Safari.

Microsoft Edge (Mac or Windows)

  1. Open Edge.

  2. Click the three dots (⋮) in the top-right corner.

  3. Select SettingsPrivacy, search, and services.

  4. Under Clear browsing data, click Choose what to clear.

  5. In the popup:

    • Time range: Select All time.

    • Check: Cookies and other site data and Cached images and files.

    • (Optional: Leave “Browsing history” unchecked if you prefer to keep it.)

  6. Click Clear now.

  7. Close and reopen Edge.

Troubleshooting

  • Still having issues? Try restarting your device after clearing cache/cookies.

  • Website not loading correctly? Update your browser to the latest version.

  • Lost saved passwords? Clearing cache/cookies does not remove saved passwords unless you also selected that option.

Quick Tip

If you need to clear cache/cookies regularly, most browsers allow you to press:

  • Ctrl + Shift + Delete (Windows)

  • Command + Shift + Delete (Mac)

This opens the “Clear browsing data” window directly.
