How to turn on your network adapter on your Windows PC

Many PCs today have wireless adapters that allow you to connect to a network without the use of an ethernet cable. Sometimes, these adapters can be accidentally turned off by the end user (you) or software. Here is a quick way of checking the adapter and turning it back on.

If there are any hardware issues, this guide will not solve them. If, after completing the steps below, your network adapter still does not work, it might be a hardware issue. Send us a support ticket and we will get it resolved for you quickly.

  • Power on your PC and login to your desktop.
  • Press the Windows key on your keyboard OR click in the “Type here to search” field on the start menu OR press Windows key + R to open a search box.
  • Type “Settings” and press enter.
  • Navigate to Network & Internet.
  • On the Status section, under Advanced network settings, click on, “Change adapter options”.
  • Here you will see all your network adapters and their statuses. A red X means not connected. This is normal.
  • If you are plugged in via an ethernet cable, you should see a connection (or multiple connections) labeled Ethernet. If all of these show a red X, they are offline. If it says disabled, right click on it and select enable.
  • You will repeat this for all that say disabled, including your Wi-Fi connection.

This may also be used by a tech pro agent to help reset a network connection. This is important if the adapter needs to be refreshed.
