Factory Reset (Complete data wipe) for iPad

Sometimes devices can have a software glitch preventing it from working correctly. While this is rare in the iOS environment, it is possible and often will require a complete data wipe (factory reset). If you have tried restarting, resetting the settings, and deleting apps, and the issue persists, it is time to factory reset the device. Outlined below are the steps needed to start the reset process.

If you are able to see your screen and access the settings menu, use these instructions.
  • Power on your device and navigate to your home screen.
  • Open the Settings application.
  • Select the "General" menu option.
  • Scroll down until you see "Reset".
  • Tap on "Erase all Content and Settings". You may be prompted to backup your apps and photos using iCloud. Select whichever option you would like.
  • You may also be asked to input your device password. Please do so if prompted.
  • Click through all the prompts accepting the reset process.
  • Once done, your device will begin to erase all data and settings, restoring it to factory condition.

If you cannot see your screen or are unable to navigate to settings, follow these instructions. Since the device is unusable, we will need to connect it to a PC or Mac and use iTunes to restore the device. Make sure you have the latest version if iTunes installed. We will also need to put the iPad into recovery mode and connect it to the PC or Mac so have your charging cable ready.

  • Launch iTunes on your PC or Mac computer.
  • Plug your USB power cable into one of the USB ports on the PC or Mac. Do not plug in your iPad yet.
  • On your iPad (6th generation and up) press and hold the power button (top right) and the home button (bottom center) at the same time. Keep holding both, even when the screen turns off.
  • When you see the Apple logo, release the power button but keep holding the home button.
  • Keep holding the home button until you see a screen showing a computer and a lightning cable.
  • Now you may plug in your iPad to the power cable mentioned earlier.
  • Itunes will automagically detect the iPad in recovery mode and will prompt you to update or restore.
  • You want to select "Restore".
  • Leave the iPad and computer alone while in the restoring process. It will take some time so go eat, spend some time with friends, call your mom.
  • After the restore is successful, you will see a notification on your screen that the reset is complete. Your iPad will also be in the setup screen.
If your iPad is not in the setup screen, the restore failed. Try again one more time. If it fails again, call Apple or take it to an Apple store so they can dive deeper into the cause of the issue.
