Applies to: macOS users
Purpose: Show how to wirelessly share your Mac screen to a TV
Why it matters: AirPlay makes it easy to project lessons, media, or presentations without cables
Before You Begin
-
Check if your TV supports AirPlay.
-
Most newer LG, Sony, and Samsung TVs support AirPlay.
-
If your TV does not support AirPlay, you’ll need an Apple TV device connected to the TV.
-
-
Make sure your Mac and TV are on the same Wi-Fi network.
-
On home networks this is usually automatic.
-
At schools or workplaces, devices may be on separate VLANs (e.g., PCs on one network, TVs on another), which will block AirPlay.
-
Step 1: Power On Devices
-
Turn on both your TV and your Mac.
-
Make sure your Mac is updated with the latest macOS version.
Step 2: Use the Screen Mirroring Tool
-
On your Mac, look in the menu bar (top right).
-
You’ll see a Control Center icon (two stacked sliders) next to the clock.
-
-
Click the Control Center icon.
-
Select Screen Mirroring.
-
A list of available AirPlay devices will appear.
-
Click your TV name to connect.
-
Step 3: Enter the Code (if required)
-
Some TVs display a 4-digit code the first time you connect.
-
Enter that code on your Mac to pair.
You’re Connected!
Your Mac screen should now display on your TV. You can mirror the entire screen or, in some apps, share only video content.
Troubleshooting
-
Same network check:
-
Your Mac and TV must have similar IP ranges to connect.
-
Example of not the same network:
-
Mac: 192.168.1.20
-
TV: 10.0.0.45
-
-
Example of the same network:
-
Mac: 192.168.1.20
-
TV: 192.168.1.79
-
-
-
Firewall/Antivirus interference:
Rare, but security software may block AirPlay traffic. Temporarily disable if needed. -
Outdated software:
Ensure both the Mac and the TV have the latest updates installed. -
TV compatibility:
-
Samsung TVs are known for occasional issues (failing to connect or dropping connections).
-
LG TVs typically provide the most reliable AirPlay connections.
-
Best Practice
If AirPlay fails often, consider using an Apple TV device. It provides the most stable and consistent screen sharing experience for both Mac and PC users.
